Piercings

People all over the world have been piercing their bodies for many centuries. Long ago, tribes used bones or shell to insert through the middle of their nose or through the ear. Ear piercing is extremely common now in America, with many women all over the country wearing earrings. Although a simple poke through the ear with a sterilized needle doesn't seem to dramatic, there are some situations where people mutilate their bodies with piercings.
The woman in the photo is Elaine Davidson, who won the Guinnes World Record for the most piercings. She has over 720 body piercings!! She is from Scotland, and has been piercings parts of her body all her life. This woman is an example of how bizarre some people's tastes in beauty can be, or how much someone will mutilate their body to get a World Record or attention.
Most piercings are used in places such as "Africa, India, South America, Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia, and the Pacific" as showing childhood to adulthood. Women will sometimes pierce their nose with a barbell ( a piece of metal with balls that screw onto each end) when maturing into adulthood. Or whatever kind of piercing is popular within the tribe which will represent their changes.
Piercing has evolved over the years, from a specific group of people to a wide range of people. In America, many piercings were considered "punk" or "scene". Now body piercings are spreading across the country, in places other than just the ears.
Many women pierce their belly buttons to attract attention on the beach in a bathing suit. Nose, lip, and eyebrow rings are a major fashion statement, and I personally have seen almost all of them in my own school. But why put a needle through skin just to have a small piercing? The truth is, in our country, it's a fashion statement, it attracts attention, and to some people is considered attractive.
